I bought plastic long hangers with large hooks at BB&Beyond where I store my scarfs. That would work well also for handbags...check em out!
I have an extra one & they have 6 hooks that are smooth. I put some handbags on them just now & its works great for one handbag on each alternating hook. I believe they are around 6 dollars.

I had a shelf installed in my closet - about 10"" from the ceiling. It had been pretty much unused space since it's too high to reach for items I might need daily. I have my bags lined up neatly - one next to the other.

Previously I kept mine on built in shelving, in their dust bags. I tried to keep the different color of the dust bags correlating with the handbags. I like things to match, look neat, so that always bothered me, plus you could not see in.
In addition I have several larger canvas storage boxes with tops, and the drop front for easy access, that line the long top shelf. Two of those, one for dark the other light, are for some collectible bags and the occasion dress bags. I am good with this part.
I had thought about the IKEA ones mentioned about, never got to them. I wanted to design something to have made, then I came across these:

I waited forever for them, because the front and back ends are zippered around, I leave an area opened. I suggested to the company to make part of design in a breathable fabric. I keep the little dry pellets packs in each, and paper for shaping. I keep on long shelf, not the hanging configuration.
I have to say it looks professionally organized, and when things are easy to see, and get to, you make better use. Plus it helped me purge, and pass on.

On a shelf in closet of guest room. Also keep shoes hanging in one of those things with pockets. (actually 2) Keep off season clothing hanging in that closet too. (handbags: none are designer)

What serenity4ever said. Do not put leather in plastic, esp plastic tubs (like Rubbermaid) that lock closed.
ETA: Keep your purse stuffed so it retains its shape and doesn't collapse or get creased.
Also, be careful to store light-colored leather in light-colored bags. Dark black or navy dust bags might rub off onto the leather. Many women use inexpensive pillow protectors or pillowcases.
