hello,

so, i just moved to a new town about a month ago.

Not too big, not too small, just perfect, loving it here.

The problem is, in a new town, how does one choose a new salon??

I wish it was simple enough, that i just needed a trim or something, but i have stubborn stick straight silver hair, that needs a new "body wave"  It's actually a perm, done on the largest rods, and i like to have a particular wrap.

Probably old school, like me.  I have been looking at salons online, and most don't even advertise perms.

are they "out" now?  who knows.

so, we don't know anyone here, haven't found a church we like yet, just cruising around, enjoying the weather here.

any suggestions, besides maybe asking someone where they get there hair done.  Like the grocery gal, or checker at the pharmacy?  Ask at the beauty college?

Actually I would do exaclty as you described.  Ask someone whose hair you like.  Explain you are new to the area.....who knows, you may make a new friend also.

Good Luck

That's how I found my stylist. I found a woman with fantastic curly hair I thought looked great and asked her where she got her hair cut. She raved about her guy and I made an appointment for the next week.

I also use Yelp reviews to find new service providers, like dentists. I try to read them skeptically and look at the reviews overall for an average instead focusing on the "worst/best" reviews.

Being friendly and approachable as you go about town and encounter people, yes, ask them.  If you are on Facebook, you can also see if your town has a page and ask there.  I see questions like that all the time on ours, including recs for dentists, nail salons, hair salons, plumbers, heating & A/C guys, appliance repairs.  Local residents are usually happy to reply.

@kittyloo  Best of luck w/ your recent move and happy you love your new location.

I’d Google salons in your area and see which ones are top rated. You may have to call several and explain what service you’d like to have done. Once you know who does the body wave you prefer, you can ask them to recommend a stylist who either specializes in that or at least does it often.

@kittylooIn our area, we have an online forum called 'Nextdoor', where people can join and post things.  Threre is a different forum for each neighborhood, but we can also send posts and receive messages from other neighborhoods.  I'm not sure if it's a nationwide thing or not, but maybe your town has something similar.  It's a great tool not only for getting recommendations for services, but also for posting about lost and found pets and items and for selling and giving away things.

if you don’t already have it, get the yelp app in the app store. it’s free. type in, beauty salons, and see which have the best reviews. it’s very helpful.

Aside from NextDoor, even if you don't use Facebook, you can set up a private profile and join a local group of neighbors, hopefully a closed group.    You can ask all kinds of advice, I'm sure they will be glad to help.

This gives you the perfect opportunity to meet some of the women in your new town. Introduce yourself and let them know you are new in town and are looking for recommendations for a hair stylist. Just ask at the bank, grocery store, post office and places like that just like you posted. This could be a win win situation for you. You might find a great stylist and make some new friends also.

@kittyloo, it's always best if you can get recommendations from people. You can always go into a salon tell them you are new to the area and have a few questions. Most places will see you as a potential client and answer your questions, those that seem like they can't be bothered, I would walk out and not look back.
