Ladies, is it possibel to suddenly develop an alergic reaction to a product you have used for almost 2 years?

i'm talking about a red, itchy hive looking rash just along my jaw / chin area. Went to an Urgent care and they put me on prednisone and Triamcinolone Acetonide cream. It cleared up. I was not sure what it was that did that so i used another brand / all was good, not exactly the results of my favorite brand but no issues.

Then low and behold I introduced my beloved brand back into my regimine one evening and cleansing and wham......... another flare up!!  i'm so bummed!!

Strange thing is ..... I can use the body products with no issues.......

Re: allergic reaction question

I recently had the same question - but not for myself - but my senior cocker spaniel.  She was on a tiny pill for 2 years for arthritis - Vet said not a curer but to make her more comfortable.  All of a sudden - wham - I was shampooing carpets - every corner of the living area for a week.  This was the warning as a side effect of the med - but why was it okay for 2 years.  Vet couldn't find anything else wrong with Cocoa - no pill now and no issues either.  Life is strange!

Re: allergic reaction question

Yes, it is.  I believe that's why every box of hair color comes with a warning to do a test before using even if you've been using the same product before.

Re: allergic reaction question

It's absolutely possible, and it's happened to me! My skin is not breakout-prone or particularly sensitive. But I've had a couple of products suddenly cause a rash or some sort of irritation after several years of use.

Re: allergic reaction question

@lax23OHS That would be a definite yes. In fact I'm going to add a couple of quotes from an email I received from Doug Schoon, who is an internationally known nail expert, just yesterday. He was answering a question I had regarding skin exposure to benzyl alcohol in nail pollish. I edited out a couple of sentences in the middle that were discussing specific details of this issue not related to allergic reactions..

"One person can react to a substance while another will not react, largely due to the sensitivity of the person's immune system. For instance, if my immune systems was previously exposed to benzyl alcohol , I would have a  much better chance of being affected by it than someone who's never been previously exposed. If after a few months of repeated exposure, my immune system may identify benzyl alcohol as an allergen and now I will be permanently allergic to that substance.  Each time I am exposed to it, I will become increasingly sensitive. Eventually, the slightest exposure would cause a major skin reaction.  Anyone with a benzyl alcohol sensitivity should avoid it, so those polishes could cause skin sensitivity." and "Once a person becomes allergic, typically the skin will react within minutes, but it could take 24 hours for symptoms to show.  However, it could take months of repeated exposure to benzyl alcohol before the skin become allergic."

You might want to compare the ingredients in the face product that you're allergic to with those in the other products. There's probably something in the face product that isn't in the others. If you can narrow down what ingredient is the culprit, it might help you to avoid it in the future.

Re: allergic reaction question

I have a ton of allergies and this happens to me from time to time. What I have found is that usually the formula/ingrediants have chaned or the percentages of them.  That is enough to cause a reaction for me. It can range anywhere from a rash to a trip to the ER.

The reaction is bad enough but the thought of finding a replacement product always makes my head spin.  Sorry that you had such a bad reaction. Hope the medication heals it quickly for you.

Thanks so much ladies!!!  I really hate I can't use my favorite brand anymore!!!  Having luck (so far) with the New Bare Minerals line. We'll see what happens!

Wonder if there will be a TSV with the new skin care line?

I had to stop Bare Minerals a long while back after they changed their formula and didn't notify customers. My face broke out horrible and DH (genius!) took my new Bare Minerals container and flipped it over and compared the ingredients  to the old one I had and TA-DA.... case closed. Totally different ingredients! I was so mad....I even wrote to Leslie and told her but no reply (big surprise) DONE with them. Now I use Everyday Minerals and no problems. So I would check out the ingredients in your new items and compare it to the old ones.
