For me the darkening on my upper lip has always been hormone related. When I was in my 20s, birth control pills caused melasma. I found once I had this, even if I could fade this with time that sun exposure would bring this out again.
Now that I'm older, HRT or hormone replacement therapy has brought out the melasma again so sunscreen and a hat outside is a must. Concealer helps but isn't a perfect solution.
