Why mineral foundation or why regular foundation?

It's getting closer to back-to-school for me and since I'm a little more tan than usual (two trips to the zoo!), I need a darker foundation. I've read and talked to some of you about expensive brands and the regular brands. I keep leaning toward trying Jane Iredale's foundation.

Like many of you, I have worn numerous mineral foundations over the years as well as other liquid and powder foundations but obviously I am still searching for my HG.

Last night I got to thinking, what makes people choose mineral or regular? I like the idea of mineral and that it can be more forgiving in color matching. I think I returned to regular because of the mineral foundations I used did not hold up throughout my workday.
