Re: Using Sunscreen

[ Edited ]

I wear foundation daily so I fist apply my SPF 50 for the day and my foundation has a SPF 20.  I don't reapply at all but I am not sitting at a pool or at the beach.  IF I was I would seek shade....reapply and be wearing UPF clothes, hat and sunglasses also.

I go out most days so I just put my SPF on daily this way no matter where I go (grocery shopping/driving around/whatever) my skin is protected from any sun exposure.  I know many feel sun exposure is a healthy good thing but I have rosacea and several other skin disease conditions that UV is like putting gasoline on a fire.

@teganslaw   I do wear SPF indoors the days I'm home, too. We have a sunroom where I spend a lot of time watching TV or reading. The 4 walls are all windows and transoms above with more glass and sun coming through. Even standing at my kitchen sink, thre's a large greenhouse window...more sun coming inside.

I've just made it a habit to apply sunscreen as my last step in skincare whether or not I plan to go out. Then if I decide to make trip out for a quick errand, etc. I've already protected my skin.

There are many moisturizers that contain spf and can be a daily shortcut....many sunscreens are also moisturiers, too.

It's just a way to scare people to buy and buy sunscreen.  I  have seen coworkers who were not able to walk outside on their lunch half hour 2 doors down to get food for lunch without slathering on spf 27 or more!!  If in the sun for more than 2 hours I will use spf 15 but often spend an hour reading outside with nothing.  Many derms and drs have said not necessary and really good to spend at least an hour in direct sun light with no sunscreen or block to get beneficial vit D from the sun.   Too many chemicals in most suncreens and blocks for me!!

Just 5 minutes of being in the sun everyday can raise the risk of skin cancer. After 15 minutes in the sun one time (shade or not) damage occurs. Running to your mailbox won't do it but a walk around the block will.

I always put non chemical sunscreen on.  I was told by my derm and also read that the rays of the sun goes through windows especially when driving.  I remember someone asking me why I put sunscreen on since I am Italian.  I asked what difference does that make.  I just know I feel better and safer putting it on every day.

My DD applies in the a.m. and then again before she walks home from work. That happens in the summer when she wears her summer attire. She is very pale skinned so the sun is not her friend.

I have some Neutrogena that  bleeds oil when I open it.  I'm going to the new Neutrogena Dry Touch that Jennifer Garner advertises.  Not too worried, lately since we are in the Canadian smoke zone and I rarely see the sun.

Using sunscreen is like anything else you can overdo or underdo.  Personally I see no need to apply sunscreen if I am in the house and go outside for a couple of minutes.

Driving or riding in the car is a no for me too.  Most car windows are tinted these days.

I think doc's that want you to slather in sunscreen daily and apply ever couple of hours have a vested interest in sunscreen manufacturers.

I do an spf 50 every day, no matter what I'm doing. If I were to be outside, I would reapply it but would also be wearing a huge hat and huge sunglasses. We JUST had all of our car windows darkly tinted because the damage to my husbands' skin is obvious from driving 3 plus hours a day in the Tampa sun. I read somewhere that Florida rivals Australia regarding skin cancer due to sun exposure; not surprised. Best friend in Maryland has noticed that her skin gets very red much quicker now than in years past when out in the sun and that's with spf clothing and sunblock (she's had skin cancer).

It takes seconds to apply, it's part of my skincare routine and it's worth it.

Re: Using Sunscreen

I just came across a product that is new to me.  It's a powder sunscreen.  It's called "Brush on Block" a mineral broad spectrum spf30 sunscreen in a sheer translucent powder.  It's on Amazon and I saw a YouTuber mentioning it.

I'm intrigued and I think it would be something that I would want to use for everyday.  I'm going to look into it.  For the beach I would use a cream or lotion.
