I have a tipping question....we just had our lawn guy do weeding & mulch.  He's his own boss and can make up the amount that he charges.  He and his helper were here for 5 hours weeding & mulching.

He charged $950.00 and he likes cash.  I only had $960.00.  I told my DH to give him the $960.00 and keep the change.

Would you give extra for a tip?  This is confusing to me.  He's the owner and his own boss.

@haddon9   Getting paid in cash = "under the table" payment = no taxes.  That amount of "under the table" payment he is charging you is the tip as he is NOT paying taxes on it.   whistling.gif

I would have asked if he had $10 as I do not have the exact amount.  If not, I would have said, "you know where to find me" as he goes off to get my change.  I hope you got a receipt!

This comment is in the wrong thread.  It will mix up the two.  There is a separate thread for @haddon9 's question about tipping for a landscaping job.

Could we please keep this thread for @lavendar's question about not giving what she intended?

All is well. Hairdresser sent me an email card for my birthday.

@lavendar if you go to him often and he does a good job, I would tell him you made an honest mistake and meant to tip him more. Next time you get your hair done I would give him more of a tip to make up for the previous time.

A lot of good suggestions, but I like @Citrine1's the best.

Yes, good suggestion by Citrine1. Who knows how much time passes before Lavendar goes back in. Perhaps her next birthday?

@lavendar - It's really sweet that you were concerned about this!

I have gone to the owner of the salon since we've lived here. Obviously the price has increased. I decided to tip ten dollars when I get just a cut and blow dry, twenty when he does the color too. These days I am getting both and not doing the in-between visits.

The receptionist told me some of his older clients don't tip anything, and he doesn't care.

I do remember growing up, Mom and I went to the owner of a salon and she never let anyone tip her. The other stylists could accept tips, but she said owners should not. Mom used to get Happy Meal cards for her two children. She did take those.

Later on when I was back in the states I went to a salon where one of my high school friends worked. It was in an old Victorian home, and she was one of two stylists. They also offered other beauty services, like facials, there. When you walked in the door there was a big sign that said "No Tipping Please." I thought it was a pretty good system!

It sounds like you have a good relationship with your stylist, and he sounds like a nice person. I would not have returned either. You handled it perfectly IMO!

Happy, happy birthday! And have a wonderful year ahead!  Smiley Happy

@lavendar   I think what you tipped is more than generous. Maybe if you feel you wanted to give more, the next time you can mention it when you give him a tip, but I wouldn't give him the extra $15 on top of the tip at that appt.

I'm waiting for prices at my salon to go way up with the tarriffs, etc. and that would mean I'd need to tip more if you go by % of services.

I already pay $90 for a 1/2 hour haircut and $25 tip.

I have a friend that is a lot time sylist and we were talking about tipping and she said it's gotten way out of hand, people are giving her 25.00 for a haircut, she says she won't take it, they are already paying 70-80 for the cut its just too much.

For myself, my wages haven't gone up regardleess of inflation and tarrifs, there is now way I could afford a 30-45.00 tip on top of what I am paying for a cut.

I'm about to just cut my own hair at this rate!

I don't think anyone is suggesting that kind of a tip on  just a haircut.  The OP had a lot done at her appointment.  Hence the cost and her plan for a $40 tip.
