Tan Towels / Tanner question!

Hi,

I've never used a self tanner before. I purchased the tan towels and want to give them a try. Here's what I'm wondering - if I apply the tan towels to my skin (or I guess any self tanner), how long do I need to wait before I can go swimming or take a shower? Will washing or swimming let's say an hour later interfere with the development of the color? Will it be streaky? Also, do these self tanners transfer at all onto clothing, sheets, showers, etc?

Help me out here - sorry to be so clueless!
