Sunscreen from the inside out.

In the sunscreen section of Wal mart I discovered they now carry Heliocare. It is a supplement I take made with fern block (Polypodium leucotomos extract) that helps protect your body from the damaging effects of the sun from the inside out. It is not met to be used in place of topical suncreen but in conjunction with. I have a family history of melignant meloma so I am viligant about protecting my body and yes, I take a Vitamin D. supplement. My Dr. says my vitamin D levels are good. Anyway, I was pleased to see it at Wal Mart as previously I had to order it from Amazon. I cant say from personnal experience it works because I avoid direct contact with the sun always, but the there is alot of interesting information about it online. Heliocare is one of several brands using the Fernblock in it.

Re: Sunscreen from the inside out.

While I love the IDEA of 'inside out' sunscreen,

supplements aren't the answer.

Just 'eat' your sunscreen.

Lots of berries & leafy greens.

You get all the benefits of nutrition, fiber, vitamins & minerals

without the extra work your liver has to do to process

a foreign substance.

It is a fern extract. I believe a fern is a plant and in the vegetable group so I think the liver would be fine with it.

Just because it's a plant, doesn't make it safe for human consumption.

If the fern is that wonderful, than just eat the fern as a whole plant food.

I haven't seen a fern in the produce section...that should say something.

These supplements are not regulated by the FDA.  Even webmd.com gave certain brands a duration of use of only 2 days, tops.

A 60-day supply for a promise & possible health damage?

Just research & research before ingesting something which

can also interfere w/ other medications.  Big price to pay.

Same results can be done less expensive & much safer actions

with whole plant foods.

I have been taking Astaxanthin for years and I never wear sunblock. It seems everything I ever try I'm allergic to. Astaxanthin is great for sun protection and so many other amazing benefits. I'll never be without it. 😁

That's a very interesting substance @NeNe1010. As a biochemist, I've always been intrigued with products made from plants and algae. I was just reading about fernblock in a medical journal and it's so fascinating about it's molecular workings. I think it's great that this kind of thing is available for people like yourself who might be at risk for melanoma. If it were me, I would want to take it, too.

Re: Sunscreen from the inside out.

The other benefits I've noticed with the astaxanthin is my joint pain has deminished greatly. I have RA and all my inflammation markers are normal. You can Google benefits of Astaxanthin and there are so many.

I have my husband on it as well and he really likes it because it helps him recover faster after he works out. He had disc replacement surgery on his neck and it helped him recover faster as well. His surgen said keep doing what your doing because it's working.

I have very fair skin and I don't burn in the sun anymore I just get a nice golden glow. I love this stuff, I can't say enough good things about it

IMG_1571.jpgNot sure what this proves. It is inconclusive. Doesn't really say yea or nay. Personally I will keep taking it on a regular basis. Also, I eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I am a vegetarian.

www.heliocare.net/fernblock.html. For those wanting more information. Apparently experts in dermatology and photobiology from Harvard Medical School helped in developing it and it is a natural extract.
