I once tried Avalon Organics Nourishing Lavender shampoo for dry hair. It was recommended to me as a “toxic free” product. Oh my gosh… it stripped my hair color and dried my hair out terribly. I assumed it would be good for my hair since it had no harsh sulfates, etc. WRONG!

@monicakm   I have silver hair and you (he) needs to be careful w/ purple shampoos. If left on too long, you can end up w/ violet hair. It's usually used only to combat yellowing. The ones I've tried can also be drying.

Sulfate free S&C are not drying. Look for ones that say "hydrating".There are many at different price points. I see more that sulfate free than those that are not.

I don't like sulfate free shampoos.  My hair doesn't feel of look clean and becomes very dry.

I alternate between sulfate-free and ones that have it. That way my hair doesn't get dried out from the sulfates but sometimes I need sulfates to clarify and deep clean my oily hair/scalp. I don't color my hair. My hair is all black, zero grays.

It's the protein rich hair things that leaves my hair feeling like straw. I just have normal texture hair.

Look for ones that specifically say they are moisturizing, like Carol's Daughter. My hair responds consistently well to Goddess Strength.

Aren't the purple ones made to reduce any yellowness in silver?

@Icegoddess

I don't know if the brunette shampoo I use has sulfates or not, it's not something I've actively looked for but it makes my hair very straw-like.  It's horrible.  The rinse out condition and the leave in one I use (I use both with each washing) takes care of it but I'm just not used to that texture and feeling when washing my hair.

Thanks ladies for your recommendations and tips.
