Re: Spironolactone users - question for you...

i have been on spiro for years and consider it a lifesaver. i am in my mid 40's with still oily skin. i use a combination of olay, kate somerville and bobbi brown. i am one of the few who doesnt care for cerave for face skin (but love cerave body care). olay sensitive skin cleanser, kate somerville or neutrogena retinol treatments, and bobbi brown for moisturizers. neutrogena clear face spf30 or spf55 for heavy sun days. kate somerville exfolikate for exfoliation. drink lots of water and be careful to go easy on potassium rich foods. to be safe make sure to follow up with your blood tests to check your liver and kidneys a couple times a year. good luck!

I agree with J-Lou... experiment with the Cerave products. Hydrating Cleanser, Foaming Cleanser, PM Lotion, AM Lotion, Moisturizing Lotion, Moisturizing Cream. They have a lot of different textures to see which one you like. I am 48 and still have acne. The only thing that has worked for me is Benzoyl peroxide. I use the acne.org 2.5% BP gel. I used it all over my face 2x per day for several months until my face completely cleared. Now, I use it 1x per day to maintain clear skin. Acne.org web site has a wealth of information. Good Luck! It is a great feeling when your acne is gone!

Re: Spironolactone users - question for you...

I used Spiro for acne, one pill once per week! Worked awesome, crystal clear skin, and I weaned off after a few years, no issues. Made me pee like crazy, so I could not do daily. I had cystic acne from the BC pill and going off of it, messed my body up big time, so I took spiro, which is in the pill.

Re: Spironolactone users - question for you...

I have taken Spironolactone, 100 mgs per day for the last 5 years. Even after menopause, I was still dealing with cystic acne. My skin improved 110%!!!!!

About 2 months ago, I decided that I probably didn't need it anymore, so I weaned myself off. About the third week after I was off of it completely, I started getting those big pimples that just get red and angry. I hadn'r had a breakout since I started taking the Spironolactone! I went right back on it! My skin is improving, I'm still getting rid of a couple of those big red pimples, but I think I'm on my way back to clear skin.

I had no side effects whatsoever from the Spironolactone.

I have been on that same med for the past year roughly. I am in my early 30's. I have sensitive skin. For acne prevention/healing, I really liked Serious Skincare's Glycolic cleanser (HSN). Gentle makeup removal cleanser: Josie Maran oil cleanser or Philosophy's Purity. Tatcha's cleansing oil is also one of my favorites but fairly expensive. The oils are especially amazing for dry skin.

Boy, I'm confused - help!

I was prescribed spironolactone a few months ago for my blood pressure. Now I see it is an acne medication. Anyone else taking for high blood pressure? I'm concerned.

Kathy, it is a diuretic. Spironolactone is used for many things. One thing they found is it helps lessen testosterone which contributes to cystic acne and facial hair growth in women.
