I remember the old "Hey Culligan Man" commercials. They sold water softeners & additives for your laundry way back in the early 60's I believe. The advantages of having a water softener have been around for ever. We have one and I use 1/2 the amount of laundry soap and have to use dishwasher gel because I only need a tablespoon for dishes. It also helps with mineral buildup in pipes and shower heads.

I do notice a difference when using soft/hard water. Hard water dries me out something awful

The minerals (mostly calcium and magnesium) in water is the reason why its 'hard water'. Those minerals clog pores and then the skin becomes dry, flaky and itchy.

Hard water is also tough on curly hair and dries it out. Curls require extra moisture.

yes - common knowledge
Recently had 20 year old water softener machine removed b/c it wore out. $3000 purchase back then.
Now I'm using Aveen moisturizer soap and lotion after shower. Big improvement to body except notice my hair misses the soft water.
Husband wanted machine for his dry skin. (deceased)
