Well for me, it really does. Trust me, I don't have patience to do things that don't work.
It did take about a week for me to begin to notice results though.
I could tell my teeth were whiter after the first time & my teeth weren't obviously yellowed. I was surprised.
Done regularly, oil pulling removed built-up tartar from my teeth. That impresses me more than the whitening. I know people who do oil pulling and, when they went for teeth cleanings, the dentist said there was nothing to clean off.
All the people I know who do oil pulling started for the whitening benefits. I don't know a single person who was looking for some sort of medical miracle.

I'll give it a try again, hopefully I see results too because I don't have the patience if I don't start to see something happening!
I figured there was no harm: I keep a variety of oils in the house and I usually end up wasting oil because it goes bad before I can use it all. Now I can actually get through a bottle in a timely manner. An added benefit: I haven't struggled with chapped lips since I started oil pulling.

I agree that it's not for everyone. It took me a couple times to get used to it, but it doesn't bother me at all now.
I think it's an amazing item for cleaning and whitening teeth. Might have to do it more regularly if it would help with my allergies! Thanks.

3 minutes, or even 5 minutes is so much more do-able than 20 minutes! I did it for a couple days, and can tolerate the action, but swishing for 20 minutes is an eternity! I might try again if 3 minutes is enough to benefit.
Gina, Just use a teaspoon full, or a little more, and do it when you're taking a shower or doing something else, and you won't notice the time. I probably do it for 5-10 minutes. If I use too much, then I can't wait to spit it out, and don't last as long.

I'd be afraid I'd swallow it.

All it took for me was the description and I knew I would never try this. Grosses me out just thinking about it.

me too! I feel quesy just thinking about it. When I first heard of "oil pulling' I thought they were talking about a facial treatment, like Biore strips or something.

This happens to me, and it has nothing to do with oil.
