Shellac nails - Is this normal?

I took the plunge and had the acrylic taken off my nails and now have shellac nails.

Unlike acrylic, my nails seem very soft and bend easily. I find myself not using my nails as much as possible.

Is this normal? When will they get stronger?

Also, does shellac damage the nail bed like acrylic?

I didn't think to ask my nail tech these questions.
