Re: STILL WEAR PERFUME?

[ Edited ]

Before I was diagnosed with asthma in my 30s I used Amazing or Pure Grace, but I stopped after that. Perfumes, colognes, and other scents can cause me to have an asthma attack. I can't use scented soaps, detergents, lotions, deodorants, cleaners, etc. I can't have fresh flowers, greenery, and scented candles in my home either. I always have my rescue inhaler with me wherever I go.

I think it's kind to avoid wearing perfumes and colognes when you know you will be around those who have issues, but I don't think I have the right to expect strangers to do the same. I usually carry a mask in my purse so if a scent is bothering me, I can put it on, and that usually helps me. There are a few choir members who have been asked not to wear perfumes and colognes because it bothers me, but sometimes they forget.

I happily wear perfume whenever I want to.  There are times when I am asked not to for certain medical appointments and I respect that.  I try to be mindful and not wear anything too strong if I'm going to be in close proximity to someone else for an extended period of time, like a doctor or dental appointment.  Several years ago I overlooked that and wore either Angel or Alien to a dental appointment.  First the technician complimented me.  Then the dentist (female) raved over it.

Back in the day, everyone knew how to be aware of their own limitations, whether allergies or preferences, and deal with them themself accordingly (wait for the next elevator, get in a different line, take a seat away from others, bring their own safe foods, etc.) but somewhere along the line the public has become expected to kowtow to everyone else, to the neglect of their own preferences and pleasures.  Worrying about the possibility of triggering someone thru everything I do sounds virtuous but it's exhausting, IMO.

@JeanLouiseFinch I loved Angel! Also loved Poison by Christian Dior.  Recently I got a sample of Victoria Beckham's 21:50 Rȇverie & it reminds me a little of them. I would like to buy the Rêverie but it's quite expensive.

Nowadays I am using up a bottle of Sarah Jessica Parker's "Lovely"...will spray one spritz up in the air & then step under it for just a hint of scent.

I haven't worn perfume in years.  My husband has a chronic cough that is triggered by strong scents.  I don't have perfume, roses, candles or any scented laundry soap in the house. I have a girlfriend who comes by, always wearing perfume.  He knows she's been here because the pillows on the sofa hold onto the scent slightly, even if I can't smell it.  We lived in Arizona for a few years, back in the late 70's. A lot of building was going on where we lived, lots of dust and dirt in the air.  Drs. at the time told my husband, an avid runner,  he picked up Valley Fever from running out in the poor air quality.  He still has the cough, so I don't do anything to make it any worse for him.

I still do when going out, and I hope I'm not offending anyone. I usually wear AG Body Spritz.

DH gave me a Chanel perfume for Christmas. I've yet to use it Woman Sad

I agree with your mom @vermint  Although I rarely smell fragrance on anyone, yesterday was the exception when I walked by a young woman and her male friend. Her fragrance was so strong, I could smell it two aisles away.

Yes, I wear perfume every single day now because I like it and it makes me happy!  My husband had COPD and was not a scent fan, so Amazing Grace and Pure Grace in the shower was about as far as I could go.  In the 14 months since he passed, I have purchased Pleasures, Chloe, Shalimar, and L'Air du Temps and enjoy a spritz every day!

I only wear after bath spritzers.  I don't know why, as I never smell it.  I just like that act of spraying it, I guess.  However, the other day I was getting a haircut and my stylist wanted to know what I was wearing that smelled so good, to the extent she wanted me to bring her the name.  I did give her the intormation, but sadly it's not available.  It was from Bath & Body Works.

I have a bottle of La Vie es Belle (sp? - Julia Roberts), but I never wear it. I now prefer the spritzers.

I like spritzing on perfumes/EDT/etc, even when I'm not going anywhere. I love pleasing scents. I have never considered being approached by someone who would tell me their dog was sensitive to what I was wearing. I don't douse myself and rarely smell it on myself or my clothing after a very short while. I once worked with a lady who, it seemed, took a bath in very strong perfume and we could tell where in our office she would be at any given time. That was offensive to my nose but she loved it so I would never tell her it bothered me.

Sorry, off topic, I used to work with a lady and you knew when she did her laundry, the next day she would reek of Downy clothes softener.  A few co-workers did mention to her to go easy on the stuff it was giving them a headache, I just turned on my small desk fan and went about my day, lol.

I wear, Summer Grace, every day. It's very light and not overwhelming. I like scents that are mild and clean smelling. I was a nurse at one time in my career and am very aware of the effects smells can have on others. My mom, wears Pheromone by Marilyn Miglin. It's very heavy and strong. That's her signature scent and I love it on her. But I can very well understand how it might be offensive to others. I have other scents, Amazing Grace, D&G light blue, Chloe, Mark Jacob's, etc. But my granddaughters recognize Summer Grace as my signature scent and they love the way Gramma smells!🤗

L'Air duTemps, was my favorite for so many years. Your post took me back to a very happy time during my teenage years. It was a gift from my parents before my first prom.  I still wear a scent every day and I have found that Amazing Grace never offends anyone as it is so mild and gentle. I am often asked what scent I use and where it was purchased.I happily tell them QVC and several other retail stores.
