I see a sampler size of this is included in the QVC beauty discovery kit. I looked at the ingredients and was surprised to see retinol right in the middle of the ingredient deck. I had thought retinol products were for evening only and this is to be applied twice a day. I'm surprised a skin doc would tell you to use it in the day time. Am I missing something?

Retinol is considerably weaker than prescription Retin A. Retin A is the one that must be used at night. There are a lot of daytime products that contain retinol.

Retinol can be used day or night, unless you are using Retin-A (which I believe is a retinoid), or a really high strength Retinol (like 1-2%).

I didn't realize that the regular, Hydroshield serum had a retinol in it. However, I do have and use one of Dr. D's night creams--I think it's the Hydroshield Dream Cream (???) and that DOES have a retinol in it.

Thanks Tooty and others. The Alpha Hydrox Retinol Rescue I use says it's for night time use only. I believe the Strivectin-AR cream was the same. It's not not just for Retin-A. Retinol is also a retinoid. The Hydrosheild has no sunscreen ingredients in it though to offset the retinol. Maybe if used with a sunscreen it's OK, but I would rather just use it at night.

Yes, like Tooty shared, as long as you use a good SPF, retinol is safe for the daytime. I use an SPF 30 over mine. Dr Denese's Defense Day Cream is meant to be paired with the Hydroshield and has an SPF of 30, as well.
My favorite sunscreen has some brightening agents in it which add luminosity, which I want on my face but not on my chest. I end up using a separate sunscreen for my face and chest just so I don't have luminous cleavage.

There are alot of new scientific studies out that are basically "de-bunking" the myth that you can't use retinoids during the day but yes, you MUST wear a sunscreen...but you are suppose to be wearing one during the day anyway if you use any type of retinoid, even if you use it only at night.

I think many would be surprised at the quantity of daytime products that now contain retinol. I have read it on a lot of ingredient lists from low end to high end. I thought I read something by Paula, a few years back, that also stated retinols weren't the absolute day time no-no that many believed but can't recall what product or topic prompted her discussing that point. It's been awhile and the brain can potentially get clogged up from the sheer quantity of skincare information/data we try to absorb~
