Retin-A Micro

My derm is changing me from Tretinoin to Retin A micro. He gave me some samples of the Retin A micro and I opened one yesterday. The cream inside seemed a bit gritty, and when I used it again tonight it still feels gritty. I can see no exp, date on the sample. Is this the usual texture for Retin A micro? The Tretinoin cream and gel that I had been using was very creamy and smooth. Any thoughts? TIA
