No one is judging their character or internal "loveliness." No need to get smarmy about it. The fact is that people who go around with calloused, grubby feet and gnarly toe-nails ARE less well-groomed than those who don''t, and quite frankly that lack of attention to an easily-remedied situation does say something about them.

As to the "disabilities that don't show" argument, it seems to me that if you can even contemplate wearing flip-flops or open sandals, you aren't too disabled to somehow get your feet taken care of, either by doing it yourself, getting a daughter or other relative to help you, paying for a pedicure or going to the doctor.

I disagree with you on this, Cinder63. I do think there are some people here that do judge a persons character on these things. Looking down your noses at someone who happens not to have their toe nails polished to me is being a bit snippety.

I thought this was funny, because I have been to some music festivals where I absolutely could not resist taking some pictures of my dirty feet!

You reminded me of the vacation DH and I took. We were water rafting and hiking, with a guide and a company, on the Colorado River in Utah and ultimately Arizona for a week. I had polish on my toes and that first day they looked cute in my Tevas. By the end of the trip, the dirt, sand, muck, had become one with the polish. It was that hot. I had the original textured toes! Great trip.

If people insist on wearing rubber flip flops or sandals in public (other than the beach), then they should at least have the decency to show clean feet!

We're living in a generation where people wear pajamas and bras and undershirts as outerwear - so maybe clean feet is asking too much???

I have a weak stomach and many things bother me. I don't care to see wounds, blood, snot, and unkept nails. I gag when I hear the noise of clipping nails. OMG, clipping toenails on an airplane! It's personal grooming. I've had reconstructive foot surgery and couldn't stand to look at my toes during that time. It's just me. I like to present myself in as good condition as possible. I'm fortunate enough to get regular pedicures, and consider them a luxury. Most people do better when they know better.

I thought the OP was talking about people not keeping their feet clean and allowing their toenails to remain too long and their callouses to build up. She mentioned polish but I didn't think she was saying it was required. Some people jumped to the conclusion that she was saying polish was a Must. A different poster said it but not the OP.

I think it's good to discuss regular hygiene because some people were obviously not taught. Some look to boards like this for tips on how to be socially acceptable. If you don't want to follow hygiene rules, it is certainly your right. But I think most of us want to be clean and well-groomed. And once again, I don't think most of us are saying you have to spend money or go to extreme measures. Just a suggestion that you should bathe regularly and trim anything that should be trimmed like hair, nails, etc. And moisturize dry areas for your own sake. There are lots of very inexpensive options for cleansing and moisturizing.

And if you wear polish don't go out with it chipped. Of course life happens and you sometimes have a chip but I see young girls especially wearing the same chipped polish for days. They should learn it doesn't look nice. Someone should give them advice that it's not proper to go around looking like that. These boards COULD be a good place to get that kind of information if we could just agree that cleanliness and neatness DO matter.
