I live in a small town in the Midwest. I moved here with my job and don't know most of my neighbors. I feel the area is safe, but I am always cautious. It's in my DNA. At night, I am more aware of my surroundings and don't go where there are no people. I don't have a baseball bat, gun or anything like that.

I watch enough shows on Investigation Discovery to know that I am safe virtually no where. I am alert much more alert and careful than when I was younger. When I look back at the places I would go, walking when it is dark outside, etc.....now....I'm leaving work on time no matter what cause the train is dangerous here in DC.
I also have a storm door and I even lock that at night and even in the day when I'm home alone so sales people can't open the door. I do one thing...when I have repair men in my home, I don't lock the door. I leave the door open (I have a storm door) so I can always run out.
I am in the house by dark especially when I am alone.

Unfortunately these days you are not safe no matter where you live. I am 40 miles east of Los Angeles in a city that is considered pretty safe, but I take no chances. I don't know all my neighbors on my street, but the ones closest to my house are friendly and we watch out for each other. Even when I walk in my area for exercise I take pepper spray and carry a big stick (mostly for dogs!). Being aware is so important. Many times when I am out shopping, I tend to be absorbed in what I am doing, but that's not good. I need to pay attention to everything. It is so easy for someone to snatch your purse or knock you down.

The only thing I fear in our neighborhood are coyotes. We lost a little dog to one. We live on a small cul de sac and feel pretty safe other wise. I will not walk at night though, lots of wood and wild life.

Who'd a thunk in my area, in broad daylight, but it happened.
I always keep my doors locked when I'm home in the office. And I'm one of those Bible carryin', gun toters!

I am very cautious and do not go anywhere alone. My girls are not though, and forget my grandchildren . . . they would leave the front door open all night long.
I also worry about my youngest daughter who runs every night when she gets home from work (just before dusk). She lives in a safe town, but one never knows who might be just driving through. As it gets darker, she will start using her treadmill and I can't wait!
However, I remember when I was young, and I was pretty oblivious to danger too. Although I do think it's worse now.
