One of the hosts used the word

"Freakin" as an adjective on air and it's really bugging me. I'm no saint, and I don't always have the cleanest mouth. But for some reason, hearing the word live on QVC rubbed me the wrong way. I'll get over it, but in the moment, I was really surprised to hear it. I wonder if the hosts ever get reprimanded by the producers for saying something.

It's probably because they want to be considered "hip" or "cool".  Man Frustrated

Another example of the dumbing down of America.

Yes, I've heard "freakin" used before on air.  It's really a substitute for a swear word (as I'm sure you know) and should not be tolerated on air.  It's not cute,  it's low IMHO and I cringe when I hear it.

Another one I'm sick of is "It's so stinkin cute" used over and over by the rep of Temptations and I thought for a quick minute that one or two of the hosts were going to pick up on it (aarg).....  Hard to take when the reps don't seem to have the vocabulary to choose different and suitable wording for their presentations..... again, JMHO  Woman Frustrated

Agree with its use or not, I don't see this at all as an example of a "dumbing down" of America.

But then, I'm very tired of that phrase being thrown around with abandon. I certainly have my own ideas about dumbness, but mostly they have to do with weightier issues.

This post comes just in time as Kerstin just this.morning said: Shut the front door. Totally inappropriate for a.shopping channel. And more so for someone who claims to be so Godly. I'm sure a large part of the viewing audience had no clue what she meant.

Re: One of the hosts used the word

Freakin' has been around so long I doubt the current crop of users even think about that particular connotaion.  They grew up watching  Freaky Friday and hearing their parents sing Le freak ce'st chic, so freakin' is just an extension of that.   If they DO know at least the ARE toning it down.   As for Shut the front door,  I've never even heard that one before QVC and never has it been in the context of telling an item to shut up.

I always thought it was a way of saying, "Wow, I can hardly believe that" when someone tells you something amazing. Here's the Urban Dictionary's example:

VickySmiley Surprisedhh, I just got this Gucci sweater for only $75.
Cindy: Shut the front door!! that's awsome!

This is how I've heard it used. I wasn't even aware there was any other use until I saw the other definitions on the Urban Dictionary's site.

When Dimitri James was presenting his Skinn products on another channel a couple weeks ago, the host used the expression in the way that I described above. He'd never heard it before and went on and on with stuff like "Shut the back door," Shut the garage door," etc. It was actually rather funny.

Agreed! Just the same as saying, "Get out!" when someone says something you can't believe.

I suppose you can read into anything anyone says and find some nefarious meaning to it if you want.
