I used to have 2 parakeets. One used to escape the cage daily, my basset hound was scared of it. I also had a canary. I miss my birds. Now I just feed hummingbirds seasonally.

i had them less than a day so far and I caught the blue one red handed trying to open the cage door 3am in the morning lol

Re: Off Topic- Anyone own parakeets?

When we were in grade school, my dad got a parakeet. My 6'2", 200+ pound navy man dad. (He later got a mynah bird). Long story short, the parakeet lived outside the cage and had free roam of our military apartment. When my dad came home in the evening, he would let out a whistle and the bird would come flying to him. One day the bird was on his shoulder and dad went outside to do something, not realizing the bird was there. A neighborhood boy, said "hi, pretty boy". Dad almost collapsed. He slowly went back in the house and the bird never left his shoulder. My dad died when he was 75 and the only time I ever saw him cry was when his parakeet died.

LOL! here you go!

My yellow one used to squeeze through bars at top of cage, flutter to the ground, walk around on the floor and the basset would run to another room.

Find an excellent avian vet and bring your birds in for an examination. Insure that you see the vet regularly. The problem I had with parakeets was the development of tumors: my vet said that tumors are the biggest health issue she has seen in parakeets (budgies). Since my birds are out loose, I loved seeing the little squeakies flying around together. Now I am down to four - two Cockatoos, one Amazon and one Ringneck - plus Jolie the bunny. The house is SO quiet.

Re: Off Topic- Anyone own parakeets?

I am enjoying reading this thread.

I grew up with a green parakeet named Pari. Yeah, I know. Pari the parakeet LOL!

He was very tame and used to ride around perched on our heads. He escaped one summer and we thought he was gone for good. My mom put a lost and found message on a local lost pets radio show. We got a call within a few days from a lady who said her son was playing in the yard when a green parakeet landed on his head. He walked carefully into the house and sure enough, it was our Pari. We got him back and he lived a nice long life.

Enjoy your babies, OP. They are beautiful.

google "lisa shae" she has an excellent website on the care of parakeets. millet spray makes an excellent training tool. they will get brave over time and come to your hand for this treat. by the way, judging from your picture your 2 seem to be between 4 and 8 months old. they have lost their baby stripes but don't seem to have developed whites to their eyes yet. the cere will change at about a year usually, to determine their gender.

Oh, that is so sweet. I have a picture of my dad showing my young cousin a Nandy Conure. When I look at that picture I can just imagine my dad taling and explaining to my Cousin about the Bird. My dad loved Birds too. I love your story.
