I haven't read all the replies, but do yourself a HUGE favor and get a Golden Retriever (from a good breeder). Ours is so sweet and calm. We're empty nesters and my DH and I treat her like "our baby." We've never been so happy with a dog!!!

"Whoever said 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' would retract that statement after looking into the eyes of a Golden Retriever."

Don't mean to offend anyone. JMHO

My parents have a golden.he is such a sweet. He even sat outside a couple weeks ago during our garage sale and greeted everyone. He had puppy classes and listens so well and they are so good with kids.

Re: OT rhodesian ridgeback dog

I just found out that a business associate / friend has a Rottweiler Ridgeback mix that they bring to work with them every day. apparently he's a great dog, 80 pounds and protective of the two women who are in the office by themselves.

Re: OT rhodesian ridgeback dog

These dogs were originally intended to keep lions in line in Africa, so yes, they do tend to have dominance problem. Also, if they do develop "behavioral" problems is likely because they are underworked. These dogs are currently bred in the US to keep marathon runners company! They like a good 25 mile a day run for exercise.

Of course there are exceptions, and people breed the dog because they love the personality. But generally, at the root of every dog are it's traits which it was originally made for.

HTH.
