OT/ Opinions about CALIFORNIA please

I have been trying to decide where to move to for the past year or so. I am from the Midwest where the weather is awful 90% of the time, so I am thinking about California. I know many places are prohibitively expensive, so I am am looking for a place that is affordable, safe, pretty and friendly, with good shopping , cultural opportunities and good healthcare close by. Is San Diego an option? Monterey? San Luis Obispo? Pasadena? Napa? I would want to rent a small, nice house in a good neighborhood.
