O/T Car starters

I am considering buying a car starter for Christmas for someone whose car is parked outside. I would love opinions on them from anyone who has one. I have heard they can cause other car problems down the road if not installed properly. Thank you for any replies and sorry this is o/t but you ladies are so well informed I decided to post here. Hope nobody is offended.
