Re: O/T Another parakeet thread

Your parakeets are beautiful. Did you purchase them from a Petco store or from a private breeder? I was a breeder of a few different species of birds but the last species are called "Lineolated Parakeets" or commonly known as "Linnie's"! They are not inexpensive however like parakeets. They really are not parakeets but a miniature parrot. The word parakeet just means small bird. Any breed if bird does best in handling when they are happened fed and hand raised. If your birds were parent raised and you are trying to train them, you should consider clipping their wings but not too short. All birds must be handled to become tame. It can be done with lots of dedication. My baby Linnie's were hand fed & Hand raised from 2 weeks of age until 8 weeks of age or until they ate seed on their own. If a person only hand feeds a baby bird & does not hand raise them or hold them it will take that bird a bit longer to bond to humans. Make sure you provide them vitamins in their water daily, the best kind is Avitron. If birds are on a seed duet that us important, but if you bird is in a pellet diet then you can eliminate the liquid vitamin. If they don't eat cuttlebone then there is also liquid calcium which is a must too. Always purchase fresh seed & not seed that is sitting on a shelf too long. Old seed can be difficult fir the birds to digest. Good luck with them they are beautiful. My male Linnie had a large vocabulary and also whistled many songs.

I got the girls from petsmart and the boys petco. the girls on rare occasions let me pet them but in general they are refusing to tame. the boys are being more difficult. I let the girls out to fly when i get off work but not the boys. petco clipped their wings and they do not fly yet. all 4 basically run away from me but i do not force myself on them. I talk to them every day. I love how they fluf up

Maybe you could conduct an informal poll and see which Q host they like best. Of course, then you run the risk that they will imitate a host you dislike, LOL. {#emotions_dlg.w00t}

Re: O/T Another parakeet thread

oh my goodness...they are like potato chips aren't they? gotta always have another one! your new little fellow is adorable. he might be a bit moody right now as i see pin feathers on his little head. he has just gone thru a molt. a misting of warm water will help soothe his itchy head. actually one of the posters mentioned vitamin drops. these are no longer recommended for budgies as they can breed bacteria in the water...i use a seed and pellet diet along with fresh veggies every morning...i add boiled egg yolk for them about once a week. your molting guy needs this as he will be short on protein. if you don't want to mess with cooking eggs there is a product called quicko that can be sprinkled on their food. a lot of birds enjoy shredded carrot on top of their boiled egg.
