More clarification needed please...

Okay, I've pretty much got the difference between a moisturizer and a serum but now I don't understand this.....are day/night creams the same thing as a moisturizer? If not, when would I apply a cream....before after a moisturizer? I have normal/dry skin and now that the colder weather is coming I'm trying to get a head start. Geesh...you ladies deserve more credit than what is given to you for knowing all the differences and when to apply. I need a manual!
