I fell for it, hook, line and sinker. Bought the start up kit, went to a weekly meeting, then did my research. It is a pyramid scheme through and through. From the get go, I was hounded. I signed up on a Sunday, went to the Tuesday meeting, they wanted me to purchase $1800 worth of products to sell and have my first party the next Saturday. My director was very encouraging and basically promised me the world. Of course she was, the more people she signed up, the more she makes, the higher she climbs the ladder. At this meeting, the directors stand up and talk about their successes and whet they started from, blah blah. This is what bothered me- as a Christian I felt a little taken aback. These women talk about how Mary Kay is a Christ centered program and how we are to be Godly women. Yet, there they stand with all the jewelry they've received for meeting certain goals, purses they've won, purses showcased that you could win the next week for selling x amount of products. And then the cars- it just a little materialistic to me. Not Christian at all. Don't get me wrong, I love jewelry and purses and cars. But it just seemed a little strange to be praising God for all this stuff. I told my director a couple days later that I wasn't interested in selling for personal reasons. She called me for months, would not take no for an answer. I guess at some point she have up, haven't heard from her . Good luck if you decide to do it, just wasn't for me.

This apparently has been a great career option for SOME WOMEN. My mother said she would have gone crazy if she hadn't had SOMETHING like this to do (with goals). You would have to have known her. She was a very "driven" woman, living in the wrong era... she needed a career, I believe. The pushy, pushy didn't bother her! (It did and does bother me). It seems apparent to me that her attitude toward someone who didn't buy or didn't "like" the products would have been met with the cold shoulder. Maybe not every consultant acts this way... this is just not for me.

But this type of company started in the days when women "coffee- klatched" with the neighbors.

Years ago, a friend of mine recruited me although I told her from the very beginning that I was not good at selling. I was going to meeting after meeting and I hated it. Back then, you had to buy more product by a certain time even if you still had some on hand. I was pushed to get parties. Finally I quit and she got angry with me. Lost a friend. I buy occasionally now from a rep that I only communicate with via website if I need something. No hard sell at all. The only thing I hate about MK is that they discontinue items a lot. Love their mascara, makeup remover, cleansers, most everything.

I wanted to add that those that get the cars have to work very hard to get to that level. MK is all they think and talk about. It takes over their lives. Everybody that they come in contact with gets to hear about MK. If you see them coming your way and think they don't see you, you find yourself looking for a place to hide, lol.

wow, so as a rep you would have to purchase more product even if you didn't need it?

that is crazy.

This is a great gift set too-

Fragrance-Free Satin Hands® Pampering Set

I used it for baby/wedding showers.

I agree!

I recently went to a MK party that a co-worker gave. I bought the Satin Hands set because I'd received a small set years ago & loved it. I might give it as a gift to others, too. It is very nice.

I might try the lipstick at another time. I am interested in th products people like.

I have not had any pressure to buy, buy, buy from my co-worker. Thank goodness. She has suggestions if I ask questions.

I worked in an office where one of our clerks sold Mary Kay. She tried to get me involved. I had tried some MK products a few years before and had a nasty allergic reaction to them. I told her this and she insisted that they had changed the formulation and that I should try them. I refused. She never took either the hint or a straight out ""no.""

About 6 months later I got a promotion to another building. I had been there a long time and knew a lot of people and had friends that I still see. They had a goodbye party for me and the MK rep volunteered to get the gift. I found out later that they collected over $300. She bought MK products from herself and gave them to me - despite my allergy. My friends were so angry with her. I never said anything but thank you and wrote everyone a nice thank you card. I gave the stuff to Goodwill.

Wow! She must have really been desperate for sales. How unethical.

I use some of the M K products and I love them, all skin care. There is not enough color in the lipstick for me, too much gloss, the mascara is so so.

The person I buy from tried her best to get me to sign up, said all I needed to do was buy so much and I could order for myself and get the 50%off.

I told her I was not interested and after a couple of tries she stopped asking.

I made it I thought pretty clear the night of the party I wasn't interested to sell especially right now I work full time and have a 5 year old grand son I like to spend my free time with. When she called about the face model thing I again said no. But banging on my door on a Saturday morning come on. If she comes back DH will put her on the move. He comes off pretty blunt and it won't hurt his feeling especially on Saturday morning. LOL. Thanks for all the good suggestions .I will go to E-Bay.
