MAC foundations--confusing..

I was at a MAC store--it seems to be a popular line, so I thought I'd check it out. Had no idea there were so many different foundations! Then I see they go by numbers, but one has a different number, so you could be a 35 in one type and a 4 in another! I came home with this big, 4 ounce bottle of foundation in #5 color, but I was a 30 in this thicker cream based mineral foundation--it's confusing! Or--am I mistaken??? When I went on Makeupalley to look up reviews, people say "I am NC35--what does the NC mean??"
