As a person becomes older the tan look is very aging. However, some people continue to do thinking that they look good. To each his own I guess. When I was younger I loved to be in the sun. Now I despise it and avoid it as much as possible. Occasionally I use self tanner in the summer to get a touch of color. I guess it is all a matter of preference but I really have no problem being pale.

I don't specifically intend to tan , but I swim and do water aerobics in an outdoor pool in the Florida sun so I always have a tan.I use sunscreen but I'm Italian heritage and I tan easily. Water aerobics is an hour long class out in the direct sun , fortunately they face us away from the sun so it hits our back mostly. My arms, shoulders and back are very very tanned. I usually sit and dry off after class for about 15 - 20 min and try to put my legs out in the sun then so they aren't white while the rest of me is tanned.

I try to keep the sun off my face , but that's not really possible in Florida. I do wear Eucerin cream with sunscreen every day.

My dermatologist is not concerned about my sun exposure. She simply says always wear sunscreen you are one of those very fortunate people who just tan very easily.

I am surprised at how many people never go to get checked by a  dermatologist.

@Daysdee, it is expensive, and many don't have coverage for it nor can afford a non-emergency visit.

I am in southern West Virginia, hundreds of miles from a beach, but you see lots of very tan people around town.   Many people here have backyard pools, spend their summer at local pools, or vacation at a beach.   Tanning beds are still very popular in this area, and shop owners offer cheap rates to keep customers tanning year round.

As a fair skinned redhead, I do not tan; I actually burn within half an hour wearing 110 SPF.   Therefore, I do not do any outside activities; no gardening of any kind, I got rid of my clothesline years ago, and basically do nothing more than driving, parking my car and walking into a store or doctors office.

However since March, I have had 14 pre-cancers treated on my hands.   I am still healing a few spots, and am always looking at my skin for a new red spot or sign of dry skin, both of which have been actinic keratosis for me.   Thankfully all of my spots have been found early enough to treat with liquid nitrogen.

My husband just had an AK on his nose treated for the 4th time this week, and a cousins wife is treating an advanced skin cancer on her nose with radiation treatments.
