SadPerhaps the 2 of you were on different channels. She thought you were asking for a brush to apply eyeshadow. That's not the same as wanting a demo. Perhaps she would have accommodated you had you said "I'd love to see how to use it. This blue eyeshadow here is very pretty. Would you do a demo for me?"
If you feel dismissed, the stores are loaded with other high end lines who would be happy to help you and get your business. Sometimes you need when to be more assertive - other times, just walk away.
Don't let this get you down. It wasn't personal. Who knew what this SA was thinking.
This is a fascinating discussion. I have trained sales personnel in various industries. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for being ignored. The companies I've consulted with issue an immediate apology, dealt with the employee, and issued you a gift certificate or card. Management would conclude by inviting you back into the store. That's how the
"big boys" handle customer service!

But unfortunately customer service no longer seems to be a priority these days and I don't think it has anything to do with the age of the customer.I'm sorry that happened to you - it never feels good to be "dismissed". However, speaking as a former "young sales girl", it's maybe a little unfair to group them all together with this young lady who gave you poor service. Perhaps it had nothing to do with your respective ages, but was due to her incompetence or disinterest in her job(?) Just a thought ...

did you speak with the cosmetics director? they would have remedied that situation right on the spot.

I don't think that anyone here is disputing this was a case of bad service. But it likely wasn't bad service due to the OP's age, either. This SA probably gives everyone the same lacking service, regardless of the seniority of the shopper.

I have never had a problem at Nordstrom. Great service.

ITA with this completely. Younger SA often don't really know what full fledged customer service or really "selling" is all about yet and I suspect when you inquired about brushes, it may never even have dawned on her that you would also want a demo.
They don't necessarily go hand in hand and if you would like a demo in the future, don't be hesitant to ask for one because you can never take for granted that any SA, regardless of age, will be able to guess what's in your mind. For example, I never expect a demo when I am looking at brushes as I am mainly concerned with the quality, sturdiness, the hair used and most of those things I can determine for myself. And if I did want to test one, I'd want to use it myself because I am the one who will be using it at home. Having a SA use it on me would not be of any help to me personally.
I also seriously doubt this was any reflection on or about you - who knows what the SA was dealing with that day. I learned a long time ago to ask for what I want and if I am not getting the service I expect, then finding someone else who will provide it for me. There is always someone in the Cosmetics dept. who will be more than willing to help.
Nordstrom's is so well known for their very successful business model that other companies actually pay them to train their own employees. I have never been in a Nordstrom's with poor CS though all retail stores today are lower staffed than normal due to the decline of customers.
And your situation sounds more like a miscommunication than anything else. So no worries and next time, be sure to speak up about what you want so the SA helping you will know exactly.

This happened in a totally different set--but we did feel invisible. My GD and I were in a Pizza Hut recently and was told to seat ourselves. Several wait staff passed us and didn't acknowledge us--no menus, no drink orders, etc. Yet we could see them all return to their gossiping station. It was an unreasonably long time for a restaurant that wasn't filled. Finally I caught the manager's eye from across the room by waving my arm. I motioned that we had not been waited on.
He immediately went over to the waitstaff and said something--but they started hopping. The girl who came to our table was very nice and apologetic, and even said, "this is so embarrassing and to think we have 5 people waiting tables." So I knew what the manager had probably said to them. She was almost excessively nice the rest of the evening.
Remember that young people have had no training other than OJT and the work ethic may not be what it once was.
Having said all that--I think Nordstrom's staff in general is full of themselves.
