I look better without it. I like showing my eye shape, so I use nothing, a little primer or concealer, or a light ballet pink shadow. Dark coffee liner and mascara and I am good.
If I do a smoky or hazy eye with taupes and whatnot, it looks cool and intense but it competes with my lip color too much. It feels overdone for most situations.

I never wore much eye shadow. I always thought it looked unnatural. Maybe a soft cream colored eye shadow to even out my lid but even then I rarely used it.
I like a very soft liner that you can barely see and some mascara but not the tarantula look that seems to be popular today. I continue to see unnatural looking dark black mascara and black eyeliner on women of a certain age and it doesn't enhance their beautiful eyes.
I am of the school that believes that makeup was created to enhance the appearance. Being "complimented" on my makeup would send me back to the drawing board.

There is no one size fits all for makeup.
Someone with soft, blond coloring may not be able to pull off black mascara. I have dark hair and eyes and black mascara makes my dark blue eyes pop. Brown does nothing.
It is not an age thing. It is all about skin tone, coloring and skill.

@Trinity11 I still wear black mascara (CoverGirl LashBlast in Very Black), because my lashes are still nearly black, as are my eyebrows, even though my hair is mostly gray. I only use one coat, though, top lashes only and then brush through them. I don't care for the "tarantula" look either. I never use black eyeliner, I do think that looks too harsh on me.

@Ms tyrion2, I wasn't referring to anyone who skillfully uses black mascara and black eyeliner. I was posting about some of the women of a certain age who overdo the tarantula look and wear dark black "lines" around their eyes. Young women can get away with just about anything but once a woman starts to have some sagging and lines around their eyes, it just isn't a "good" look.
JMO, you need not agree.

I like a flesh colored neutral eyeshadow on the lid and I set my brown eyeliner with brown shadow on top and a bronzy color on the bottom. I only color the crease if I'm going out at night and want a more dramatic look. You would wonder why someone with such a simple eyeshadow routine has like 65 pallettes? I have no good reason!

66 still use shadow, but only light colors that are matte.

Very rarely have I worn actual eyeshadow. The last time I did was for Halloween. I did a cat face and my eyes turned out really good. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get the look right. I have hooded eyes so it's more difficult for me to apply shadows in pans. Liquid eyeliner works best for me and is easier to apply. If I want some eye color, I use some makeup that's for cheeks and eyes for a little sparkle. I also just bought some liquid eye gloss in a silver color. I find silver, bronze, and dark pink colors look best on me.
I do like watching tutorials on YouTube. Some of those women (and men) do a great job and are pretty talented. Some of them do give good tips about applying shadows and what they recommend.

I have not given up, but I rarely use shadow. If I do, though, it's as natural as possible. Often I will use my blush color just to define my crease, or slighly above that.

I love all aspects of makeup and will never give up any of it. My adjustment over the decades has been that I don't experiment with colors and applications anymore. When I was in my 20s, I probably tried every color and finish of eyeshadow in the world. I even played around with colored mascaras from time to time (in seasons where colors were available). These days I'm still wearing foundation, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and lipcolor whether I'm going for a natural look or full out glamour. That said glamour just means an amped up version of my regular colors with a bit more sheen and sparkle used in the application.
