I have question about Amazon.com

Is it like EBay? I see where there are new items and also used items. I have always been confused about this so I have never ordered from them. They are rated high in online shopping so what is it? I always thought it was more of a book store. I see where they have a lot of everything. Are the items from private vendors like EBay? I am just confused. I know you wonderful posters will know.
