I'm on my own schedule. No more slave to my roots. I do my own color and highlights using balayage. That is the simplest highlighting technique...cost is pennies for color and bleach. Use a toner if needed to color correct.

I have medium length hair, some grey and dark brown. I get the roots touched up every 5 weeks with a trim. My highlights are done 4-5 times a year, every third visit. I sometimes use root touch up to cover the grey since 5 weeks is a bit longer than I would like but don't want to pay for any sooner right now. The root touch up is a cheap way to stretch it and I use a half of the box, so I can get two applications out of it.

Oh dear, I am so frugal in so many ways, but my hair has been the exception. I had chemo 5 years ago and this beautician was so nice helping me thru this time. I guess I trusted her. She is very particular that is why I like her, but this sounds off the top.

I get my highlights touched up every 4-6 months. My hair grows very slow so that helps, but in between I call it the "poor girls' ombre" look, LOL! I love the root lift I get from fresh highlights!

I went for my color, cut, and highlights yesterday. I asked my beautician about getting my overall color less often and highlight less often. I have a natural part down the back, and almost all grey roots, so she preferred not to do that. She likes my root touchup, and suggested I do that every 3 weeks, and move my apt from 5 to 6 week. I like that idea, and it will save me a few hundred dollars a yr. Thanks girls for the encouragement.

That's soooo funny, suzeecat!!
I'm thinking about balayage. My stylist doesn't have enough experience with it, so I'm going to make an appointment with someone who does a lot of it -- and teaches it. I used to get highlights hand painted (same concept as balayage) years ago and liked it a lot. I'm also getting tired of the uniformity of foil. But I can't do "ombre by design" (lol) because I definitely need/want the lift we can get from highlights. Plus I think ombre (except for the "slow hair growth technique", which I'm wearing now, lol) looks better on really young women with super thick and long hair. And even then, ombre is not one of my favorite looks.

I get high lights and low lights every 6 months. I'm a natural blonde and just get lighter and darker blonde put through my hair, so I don't need to do this that often. Plus, it's probably not that good for my fine hair.
