How many serums at one time?

I've been wondering how many serums can you apply at one time and still have them remain effective.

I know about applying them from thinnest to thickest. But how many will penetrate the skin and do what they are supposed to do at once?

Most are pretty expensive, so who wants to waste money if they don't penetrate the skin and work?
