How do I conquer the "cake face"?

I recently bought Revlon Colorstay foundation amoung other drugstore brands and while the coloe seems spot on.....I really feel like I am wearing a cakey face of makeup!! I want fuller coverage, but not the muck feel. I'm so tired of thowing money at so-so outcomes.
