How can I stop foundation from looking patchy?

No matter what I do, by the end of the day my foundation is patchy and clinging to dry spots I didn't even know were there. I use a good moisturizer, use primer, and have tried several foundations. It always looks great at first then slowly gets patchy and looks horrible. This doesn't happen with powder foundation but I need the coverage of liquid. Any thoughts and/or suggestions? Thank you!!
