How Long Between Hair Coloring?

I have reddish brown hair with a few red highlights. It's a great color for me (64) as I had jet black hair until my 40's. Problem is my hair grows so fast that I have to go in for root touchups every 3 weeks and that's pushing it. After the first 2 weeks the roots are already starting to show.

Anyone else have this problem and if so what do you do? I did the root touchup thing many times, but it really only buys another week.
