How Do You Use An Eye Pencil Smudge Brush?

I know this is a dumb question as it is such an easy thing to do, but everytime I use the smudger brush at the end of my eyepencil(CG) for a smudged look it just wipes everything off that I put on I even had a light hand. I like that smudged look but I just can't get the kknack of it. Any recommendations?
