What memories this brings. I can remember when I was maybe 5 or 6 and my mother gave me a home perm. Once it was done, she picked me up to look in the mirror and I let out this blood-curdling scream. I can still hear myself!!! Never again.

Was it a Tonette? hahah Toni was the leading home perm back in the day. Then they made one for kids called Tonette. They should have been illegal, LOL!

Let me know how it comes out. Special care needs to be taken with diabetics, and people with hormonal issues like hyperthyroid. Also, certain medications can hinder a perm. Since I do not know her mobility and health issues. I will give you safety tips. make sure you use vasoline on the neck, around the ears and face. Perm solution is watery, it runs. Elderly, and people with sensitive issues can burn. Change the towel around her neck after applying solution and wipe neck with damp cloth to remove solution. Make sure your mom has a towel handy to cover face in case solution runs in face or eyes. Have rinse available just in case gets in eyes. Milk neutrilizes the perm solution so rub with milk if it burns.

I imagine home perms are a little more diluted than professional perms. I know a common problem was the perm solution would get on neck towel, the towel wouldn't be changed until after perm. When the towel was removed client had burns on neckl line from solution.

COPD is the main issue...60 plus years of smoking.

All these tips are wonderful, I will read, reread and read again before I do this on Saturday.

I think I will copy and paste into a Word doc so I have the info, I'm a little nervous since I've never done this before, I just wish I could take her in the car to a real professional.

Thanks so much!

I will truly report back.

I'm sure it will turn out great...my 3's are all done with...

1st the makeup ruined with the windshield fluid 2nd my store partially flooded with a cracked radiator and 3rd, the lipstick in the dryer

I sure had my messes lately.

Wish me luck, this afternoon is the magic time....

will report back either tonight or tomorrow.

(did stop in at her salon this morning for a vote of confidence and checked the size of the rods they used and she offered a big wad of cotton for around the face...told me to take it off and then put a fresh one on...how kind was that!!!!) couldn't though convince her to come over and do it...oh well.

Let me say it is so nice to have a group of ladies who can help, checking everything before I did anything helped and fortunately, it turned out well.

So thank you who shared helpful hints.

oh my gosh ladies...I'm going to be a pro..........................(not!)

I wash and set her hair once a week so rolling isn't an issue. I did read about keeping the hair wet, will have to get a spray bottle and I think I'm going to need a roll of cotton for around the face, forgot about that. I think I have Vaseline too so I need to put that all together and best advice, read the directions.

It was so easy when she could walk to the car, get her in and walk into the salon, now due to just slowing down that's not possible anymore (just need to accept that). That's the worse part of getting old, just seeing the "stages" of age, first you're so mobile then something just "stops" you and lately it's getting more and more with mom. Oh well, guess I'm happy I can do all these things for her. When she was in a rehab facility years ago, there were people in there without any family presence, that must be hard on them. The one lady had a son but he lived in another state and just came to visit only 2x a year, he was wealthy enough that he paid for her permanent stay but I think having someone come and visit and do things is good.

Probably Saturday I'm looking at but I'll let you know how it turns out.

Perm..... check, rods.... check, papers.... check need cotton and vaseline

Nantucket Shore, bless you for taking such good care of your mom.

Your statement about the lady with the son made my blood pressure rise. I saw this constantly when I had a loved one who was in a nursing home. If he can pay for her stay, he can get his behind on a plane and visit more than twice a year.

It could have been a Tonette or maybe a Bobbie!!! My mother should have been outlawed from giving home perms.

I was all about the (poodle) perm when I was in high school, back in the '80's. Even now I can recall the odor of the perm chemicals!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Me too!! I have tons of fine hair and boy did it poof up. I remember those cold days of wetting it to style it with gel, and off to school. The gel got so hard in those days! I think it was mortar and not gel, but then again, I think instant oatmeal is the same!

With your directions, I could do it too because you make it sound SO easy, but wow what things we put on our bodies for beauty! I remember all that Vaseline and cotton rolls. My skins was really sensitive to that stuff and boy did I get loads of Vaseline and cotton. She often changed the cotton and reloaded the Vaseline once the cotton got wet/soaked. The way the wet cotton didn't stay on my skin, like you recommend with the towel. I would be at the parlor all day to get a perm. After two boxes of solution and extra time, I would have a perm, but boy did it take a while, hours! No I really do think we were and are crazy for some of the stuff we put our bodies through for beauty!
