Highlights and Perms

does anyone have their hair highlighted and permed with good results? I have very fine, thin, straight hair and no matter what product I use my hair is flat. I get it highlighted to cover the gray (only gray in the front) and wanted to get a perm (at least some body), but my hairdresser said it will end up burning my hair and that I would have to do one or the other.
