My cuticles are overgrown and thick ! I guess it was the cold winter but nothing I try seems to help. Any suggestions please?

Try soaking them in warm water and then gently pushing the cuticles back with an orange stick and then applying Vaseline on them. If not that, a good hand lotion or cuticle cream should help.

Get in the habit of pushing the cuticles gently when you're drying your hands. Avoid cutting if possible as that can make a bad situation worse.

If you can afford one, I'd treat myself to a professional manicure or both manicure and pedicure. Then after the professional treatment, you'll find it much easier to keep them in good shape yourself.

I use J.R. Watkins cuticle cream. Ulta doesn't carry it anymore. I find it at Cracker Barrel of all places. Works great, every night while watching TV I rub it on and keep pushing my cuticles back.

I have very thick very mean cuticles year round. The only thing I have found that keeps them tame is Deborah Lippman's cuticle remover and the metal cuticle tool that was sold with it. This winter I've needed to tend to them at least once a week. I never, ever cut them. That is a guarantee of hangnails and very unattractive re growth.

You should be able to get a good manicure for no more than about ten or twelve dollars and that will really help if they're that bad.

Then, if you just keep pushing them very gently back yourself, you might be able to go six months or a year before needing one again.

Try to do this after you've been washing your dishes when you remember. Try to wear gloves if you're doing yard work or going to be out in the cold.

If you don't have some good nail clippers, emery boards, etc. get some.

If you're going to go to a salon, try to get a referral from a friend or check it out online as you don't want to pick up any nasty infections. There is a lot of information available online about this....just like so much else. I think most salons are aware of the dangers so are taking precautions after the exposes that have been done. But be careful as different states and counties have different laws regulation hair and nail salons.

Now that short nails are in style, it really is a breeze to keep your nails looking pretty good and imo I can make mine look as good as a salon if I'm careful about applying the polish. Mine naturally are very white when they grow out from the nail bed so I've often been asked where I go to get my French manicure lol! I just keep them shorter and filed and shaped evenly and use clear polish to get that look and don't bother with any of the special polishes they have for that effect as I wouldn't be able to apply the white tip evenly myself.

The important thing is to get your cuticles trimmed nicely and then your nails will look much better with no polish or whatever color you want.

Crabtree and Evelyn Gardener's helper cuticle cream. Keep one in my purse, one on my night table.

Clarins has a nail and hand cream that is not made out of grease and works great! Check it out, I need another tube right now. You do have to push those cuticles back to loosen them. Be sure to soak in warm soapy water first.
