I have not had any success with cuticle removers. Must be doing something wrong.
@granddi I use a fine nail file and carefully sand them down when needed.
I have the hardest and most disgusting cuticles in the world because of scleroderma. I have to cut mine. For me there is no other solution...I've tried everything.
@SilleeMee, I don't have scleroderma, but I do get really bad, hard hangnails mainly on my middle fingers. They're not ugly looking, but drive me crazy. I used to pull them out, which is quite painful, but then I got an infection after doing that. So, now I try not to pull them out and resort to cutting them. I wish I could find something to soften them and keep them soft.

There are two products that I use daily. One CND Rescue Rx which is a cuticle oil. The other product is Hard As Hoofs which I get at Walmart. This really helps my cuticles and I have very thick cuticles.

@Katilein during a recent trip to the dermatologist I asked her what I could use...she suggested good ole vaseline! I also have dry cuticles and I will say the vaseline seems to work. I use it several times a day rubbed right into the cuticles and the left over is used as hand cream.
I also have used it on my dry heels with socks to bed at night.

The ONLY thing that has ever worked for me is applying and reapplying whatever oil I am using. I do this several times a day. Twice a day helps but the more times a day I do it, the better my cuticles get.
I tend to put it on before using the computer, watching TV, reading a book, and before bedtime so it will be on for a little while. If, for any reason you need to wash your hands and do not want to disturb the oil, just use a hand wipe or lay a wash rag down and run your palms over it, being careful not to rub oil off. This will keep you from getting the oil all over everything. Good luck!
