 Hi All.  I was wondering if anyone can answer a question for me.  Is there such a thing as red hair highlights?  And if so, how is that achieved?  I have had blonde highlights in my hair before, but am interested in red, if it's possible. I have dark brown hair and think the contrast with the red is so pretty.  Thanks!

Re: Hair Highlights Question

Yes there are red or reddish hilights, from personal experience it generally is a two step process, bleach to lighten the hair and then a rinse to tone the hair to the color you and your stylist agree on

Re: Hair Highlights Question

Thanks @I am still oxox.  And then how do you maintain?  Just the rinse every so often if the highlights turn too blonde?  My stylist wanted to do bayalage, but I just want a few random highlights throughout.

@Arianny

You will have to get them "redone" on occasion which depends on how fast your hair grows, chat with your stylist who knows your hair, I am only chatting from my own experience and I have very dark hair

Re: Hair Highlights Question

Yes..I have dark chocolate brown hair with reddish mahogany highlights (baliyage painted on, no foils) with a glaze over it. In between to maintain, my stylist does a refresher glaze and I use Pure Blends color shampoo in Cocoa or she mixes my  own personal Pure Blends mix depending on the red tone. This helps a lot with the brass and fading.

Re: Hair Highlights Question

My DD has red highlights through our her brown hair.  She has balayage or as I call it hair painting.  It looks beautiful.  Downside is that it is expensive.  Because her hair is long I believe it costs around $150/200 but it grows out naturally so she could go six months without having it done again althougj sje jas ot dpme every  4 months

Re: Hair Highlights Question

@Arianny  I use to wear reddish highlights in my hair.  Your hair is just lightened a bit and they probably use color in it too. Cat Happy

Re: Hair Highlights Question

Be careful and be prepared for them to fade quickly! Red can be very difficult to achieve without be brassy, too dark, etc. Alos, red fades very quickly- any reputable colorist will tell you that!

Re: Hair Highlights Question

Thanks everyone for helping me to understand how this all works.  I need to put a little thought into whether I want all the upkeep.  It looks so pretty in dark hair, though!

I have very dark hair and I suggest a caramel warm brown instead of the red highlights. No bleach is needed and they are easy to  maintain. Just make sure your stylist uses the right toner(s) afterward. Looks wonderful on dark hair. I currently have blonde highlights since I forgot to instruct my stylist to do these and she always opts for blonde since I am very pale. But I prefer brown.
