Thanks @Toots711! That was interesting and fun! I didn't know they had ankle bracelets back then.

I briefly thought about becoming a flight attendant in my first year of high school. One of my favorite swim instructors, who was beautiful, became one after college. I thought about going to foreign lands and learning all of the languages. There was just one problem --

Don't think I'd make a very good 1950's woman.  Glad I'm not in that era.

I always balked at that kind of advice.

It reminds me how women had to dress when I entered the corporate world in the 70s, especially if a woman wanted to be anything except data entry or take shorthand. Men were in charge and women were 2nd class.

Women were kept in their place back then. Many men want women to be in that place today.

Women have much more to offer and can equal or out-perform men without having to dress a certain way.

@monicakm

In my youth, I thought I wanted to be a "stewardess" too.  It was one of the few ways out of my small town life.

Somehow, I managed to get an interview with American Airlines in St. Louis.  During the questioning, I was asked what my maximum weight had been in the last 5 years.  I answered 130 (I was 5' 6").

The response was something like, "That's too much.  Those are slim aisles and we need slim girls."

Obviously, I didn't get the jobcatlolll:

And, obviously, times have changed!

Emirates flight attendants. Has anyone flown Emirates? I have not.

The image shows a smiling woman wearing an Emirates Airlines flight attendant uniform, featuring a beige jacket with red trim, a white scarf, and a red hat with a gold emblem. Her professional attire and cheerful expression suggest a positive representation of her role. The post text by @UltraDane indicates she is Danish and currently works for Emirates, aspiring to join Lufthansa, adding context to her career aspirations in aviation. No platform watermarks are visible.

I would never want to have lived in the 50's @monicakm .   Many reasons.

Flight attendants used to have weigh-ins at work. If they were overweight (I mean 5 lbs), they were cautioned I think at first. Then they could lose their jobs. They starved themselves. I've seen them mistreated and disrepected on board by many male passengers who saw them as objects.

My mom and I went to the same college, and not a whole lot changed in the interim years. She was not allowed to wear pants of any kind. When I was there women had to sign in and out of the dorms if we were spending the night elsewhere. The men did not. This changed in my sophomore year as women no longer signed in and out.

I worked at a bank. The men smoked wherever they wanted in the bank. The women were required to go back in the break room to smoke. None of the women tellers were provided any type of seat or stool while they worked. The men had stools.

The greatest faux pas I could make was to have a bra strap show or a slip hang below my skirt. What horrid transgressions those were!

Doesn't sound so great to me.
