Re: Nail Inc.'s Gel Effect, I should say it doesn't have the longevity of a gel manicure. It stays on me, at least longer than most. What I truly love is the fast drying time. The kit breaks down to a fairly good price.

$50 sounds really steep for a gel manicure... and I live in a thriving metropolitan area.. in fact, in my suburb most services are inflated.

what is that? Where do you get it? I love the translucency of the gel polish but I don't want to mess up my nails. I did acrylics in the 80's

There are Gel Nails which are applied like acrylics. They require a fill every 2 to 3 weeks. What is popular now is a Gel manicure. This is Polish Only - it is "cured" under a UV or LED light. It requires pure acetone to take it off. A good many salons will soak your fingers in a bowl of pure acetone & then scrape what polish is left off the nail with an orange stick. The manufacturers: CND makes Shellac, there is Gelish, Revlon makes a polish that can be purchased at various retail stores, i.e., Walmart, CVS, etc. There are many varieties of gel polish now that can be purchased at a retail store or on the net, example: Amazon. A popular gel polish that does not require a base coat & can be cured under a 60 watt bulb is Vinylux. It is made by CND & has many of the same colors as Shellac. Back to the removal process, CND has wraps that you wrap around each finger & the acetone is on the nail only. Leave the wraps on for 10 to 15 minutes. One thing to be aware of in looking for a salon that does gel manicures is the nail bed Does Not Need to be roughed up to apply the polish. The manicurist can give you a regular manicure & before applying the base coat, the nail bed should be cleansed with acetone. If the manicurist roughs up the nail bed you know the salon does not know what they are doing. Gel polish is just that, a polish that is cured under the above described lights & removed with acetone. A gel manicure will last 2 to 3 weeks. Hope this helps!

Try cnd vinylux polish (same company that makes shellac) that wears like a gel. It IS similar to a gel polish I think, in that light exposure (just regular indoor or outdoor light) hardens it. But you're not putting your hands or feet under a lamp. It comes in beautiful colors and costs @ $4-6. Dries in no time. I've bought mine on amazon. It lasts for several weeks. You remove it like you do other polish, but it probably does take just a bit longer and a smidge more elbow grease. To me it's worth it. Eta sorry I wrote this before seeing the above post. I don't find the removal process arduous at all, just take the cotton ball with remover and go over the nail a bit more

When I had them done at the salon for a while my natural nails were a mess, thin and peeling. I also have perfect natural nails. My salon used Shellac. I purchased the Mally gel nail polish kit and bought the Shellac myself. I do not rough up my nail and have had no problem in a coupe years with the Mally kit and my own color. I use her base and top coat. BUT, my favorite thing to do is a regular polish mani, let it dry for one hour, then top it with a shellac top coat.

To the person who asked, solar oil is just a type of nail oil I got from my manicurist. I'm sure any brand would be about the same. I can't promise everyone would have identical results, but my nails were fine after the last gel manicure. Hope it wasn't just a fluke!

Again, thank you to all of you who took time to reply about gel nails. I re read them all again and have learned a lot about the gel that I didn't know, for instance, a plain gel polish mani. I still am not getting one, around here it is probably Greek to them. I have used Solar Oil for years, and have never found any other oil to really sink in the cuticles and nails as well. Thanks again!{#emotions_dlg.wub}

I looked up both Gel Effect and the Vinylux. Any idea where I can purchase these brands that aren't on-line?
