Dont do it. If you have beautiful nails now, they will be ruined . You'll regret it.

DO NOT do it. I did it once and really regretted it. It took a long time for my nails to recover. Just get a regular manicure if you nails are in good condition. My daughter had the same bad experience.

I had them done about 3 weeks ago, and took them off myself about a week ago. My nails underneath were just fine - in fact they are better then when I had them done.

My nails tend to peel, and the 2 weeks with the Shellac on them kept them from peeling and breaking. I had to cut my nails back so I could type comfortably.

I take them off myself with some acetone, puff and aluminum foil just like they did at the salon. Most of the polish just crumbled off, and the little bit I had to scrap I did with the cap of a Bic pen (I use the caps off Bic pens for a lot of silly things).

I then slathered them in nail/cuticle oil and they are just fine.

I'll be doing it again soon, since regular polish (sticky base, 2 coats OPI, 1 coat some fancy smancy brand I can't pronounce topcoat) won't stay on my fingers through one shower.

I have naturally rotten nails. I love the one step gel polish. It comes off easier that the one with base, color and top coat. I used to get it from Katie Cazorla, Hollywood flash nails. I think she discontinued it. I found Sensationail Fuze one coat at Walmart, Walgreen and Riteaid. There isn't a lot of colors, but I love it. I already had a LED light to dry nail. All I do is a light buff, wipe with 91% alcohol, polish nail, wipe again with alcohol, to remove sticky and I am done. After about 2 weeks I scrape it off with my fingernails and start again. My nails can finally grow. If I had good strong nail that I could leave without polish, maybe this might not be the best. However if you have poor nails, peeling and splitting, I recommend it. I really LOVE Fuze. Just wish they had more colors. I like pale colors. Word of warning, the colors look different than the bottle.

They are wonderful, no doubt. I kept mine up for a while, but came to my senses when I saw what it was doing to my natural nail.

It's a very personal decision. I can get a nice gel manicure for $30 that last for quite a while. Right now I choose to go natural. I purchased Nail Inc's Gel Effect polish, which I love. No, it doesn't give you the fatter nail look or longevity, but the colors are pretty and it's way above average.. at least with OPI and other brands I've tried.

I've always had beautiful, hard nails, but darn if every time I had a manicure, I would ruin the polish within an hour! Then I discovered gel, and it was wonderful! The only reason I had to take it off was because my nails grew. Two important things. First, don't attempt to take it off yourself. The first time I did, I really messed up my nails. Second, reserve it for special occasions. I don't do it regularly now, I think it's the soaking in acetone to take the gel off that does the damage and dries out your nails, rather than the gel itself. Your nails should otherwise be just fine!

Re: Nail Inc.'s Gel Effect, I should say it doesn't have the longevity of a gel manicure. It stays on me, at least longer than most. What I truly love is the fast drying time. The kit breaks down to a fairly good price.

$50 sounds really steep for a gel manicure... and I live in a thriving metropolitan area.. in fact, in my suburb most services are inflated.

Similar to red convertible girl. I had them and they were wonderful. I took them off a few times and let my nails take a rest for a few months. I never had any trouble with my real nails.

The main thing is to get it done by someone who is really good and knows what's she's doing. Sometimes people don't get it done right and bacteria grows between the real and gel nails. That's where the problem happens.

Others here are much more knowledgeable than I am about all of this. I have seen people's nails who had bacteria grow in their nails. It looks really bad.

I have two sisters who are RN's (and lots of nieces). They all say the same thing ""make sure it is done right and don't let a long time go between fillers"".

I just got bored constantly keeping up the fillers. It is difficult enough for me to get pedicures in the summertime.

Do your research. Check out more than one place. Talk to other people who've been there. That's what I'd say.

I loved the way they looked. I've thought about it several times. I wear jewelry that always matches my outfit and compliments on the jewelry. I just can't stand constantly sitting and sitting....

I LOVE gel nails! They are more expensive, but they are worth it. A typical manicure lasts only a couple days for me, but gel nails last 2-3 weeks. They don't mess up my nail bed at all. It isn't like putting on acrylic nails. It peels off sort of like a nail polish. I recommend it to everyone.

I read that gel polish is porous (though it doesn't seem so) and that using solar oil on the cuticles and nails once or twice a day while the gel polish is on will nourish the nail bed and prevent damage. I get a gel manicure only for special occasions, but the oil really worked for me last time. My nails were fine after removal--not usually the case.
