Is there a spray-on sunscreen for the face? I know Neutragena has a body spray s/s that I use. Also I'm wondering if you add your sunscreen into your foundation and then apply, maybe that will work. I do this with my liq foundation and have no issues. and I also use a clarisonic on my skin to get it really clean--sounds like you might have a barrier of dead skin that won't let things rub in and disappear. How about trying a very gentle exfoliator first.

I will give this a try with adding the sunscreen to my foundation. I have a device I got at Wal-Mart, a battery powered face brush that works pretty good. I can't use it everyday, irritates my skin. I am also looking into a new skincare line. Thanks for your advice! Have a good day.

You know I only use my clarisonic once a day but tried it before and I re- acted the same way with the irritation. I found I was pressing the brush too hard into my skin. Just touch your skin lightly with the skin brush and guide it, don't force it --a light touch is all you need. Made a world of difference and my skin LOVES it.

Re: Foundation and Sunscreen........

I would highly recommend calling Paulas Choice and talk with a skin care expert about your issue. They have amazing SPF products that they could recommend one for you. Even if its not Paulas Choice they can reccomend another brand that may work for you.

Re: Foundation and Sunscreen........

I recommend checking out the sunscreens from Suntegrity. They are 20% zinc and they do have a tinted option which would not leave any white areas. They wear well under foundation.

Re: Foundation and Sunscreen........

Peetie, I also used Elta MD 41 tinted. (My derm recommended it to me years ago, also.) I don't often need to use foundation, because the Elta is coverage enough, but when I choose to, I find that if I apply the foundation immediately after the Elta (using a beauty blender sponge), it goes on really smoothly and my skin looks great. No white residue, etc. But if I wait 10 or more minutes after applying the Elta, it doesn't blend well at all. So, you might want to try that as part of your experimenting.

I can't use Zinc, it irritates my skin. My favorite sunscreen for my face is Clarins UV Plus HP with titanium dioxide and no zinc.

Titanium dioxide protects against UVB and short UVA, but not against longer UVA rays.

Right now I am using Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer spf 30. There have been some issues with the formula being whitish and balling up in the past. I have stuck with it, though, and it is a lot better than it used to be. Its not perfect, but is 19% zinc oxide and it isn't greasy and doesn't irritate my sensitive skin. Just make sure you rub it in really well.

Could it be that the zinc isn't what's irritating your skin, but the other ingredients in your sunscreen?

Re: Foundation and Sunscreen........

peetie,

I just posted about sun screen last week. I was having the same problems you are. I got some great suggestions on here, and I went with the Elta MD. The tint coverage wasn't enough for me either, although it didn't make me look like the tin man. Someone on another blog suggested Jane Iredale Loose powder mineral make up. I don't do powders or mineral makeup. I read alot of reviews on this make up and decided I would contacted Jane Iredale via her website email and a personal shopper sent me a sample of the color she thought would be a good match. I have to say, I love the stuff! SPF 40, doesn't settle into my lines and wrinkles, doesn't make my way too dry skin look or feel dry, doesn't look like powder and goes on well over my sunscreen if needed or I can just wear it alone. After I got the color that matched my skin, I looked on Ebay and found the exact color, brand new, for about half the price. You might check it out and see if it works for you?

Re: Foundation and Sunscreen........

I lost my mom to skin cancer ten years ago, and have had a number of skin cancers and pre-cancers removed myself. So I never leave the house without sunscreen. I use Elta MD UV Facial SPF30+ with no problem. But I do apply my foundation just a minute or two after the sunscreen, no waiting 10 minutes. There are quite a few Elta MD sunscreens available for the face - maybe you would do better with one of the other versions. My dermatologist gave me little sample packets of all of the different EltaMD products to try out. I used a different one every day, then purchased the one that worked best for me. Also, my foundation includes a sponge puff, so I'm patting the foundation on rather than rubbing. Whatever you decide, do NOT just add sunscreen to your foundation. This will not provide the amount of sunscreen coverage you need as a person prone to skin cancer. Also, the powder sunscreens don't provide as much protection as liquid sunscreen. Powders are good for mid-day or mid-afternoon sunscreen touch-ups without disturbing your make-up, but shouldn't be your primary sunscreen. Remember, being susceptible to skin cancer, we can't go by guidelines for the general public - we need to be extra careful.

Re: Foundation and Sunscreen........

Peetie, because you have experienced a genuine medical issue and are under a doctor's care, I urge you to see a licensed esthetician or makeup artist for help in making your makeup work with the sunscreen recommended by the doctor. There should be some type of skincare salon or spa in your area where you could find such professionals. Your doctor may even be able to recommend someone. Dermatologists are quite used to addressing the concerns of female patients with regard to following their course of treatment and wearing makeup.

Good luck and good health.

Re: Foundation and Sunscreen........

My favorite is EltaMD with tint. It covers well, has a high SPF and loves my super sensitive skin. Also, Solar Sciene MD tinted is a good one too. I don't need any foundation when I use these. Sun screen is what keeps my skin from looking old! I'm 72 and have good skin. Sun screen SPF30+ rain or shine, hot or cold.If I want a bit of coverup for redness, I use IT cream cover; a little dab is all I need.
