Formula or Measurements for root touch up?

I always buy the root touch up kits, as I don't need to color all of my hair, just cover the roots. Those touch up kits cost as much as (or more than) a full box color. I read here on the boards awhile ago something about using part of a regular box kit and saving the rest for another root touch up later.

Does anyone have measurents or a formula to mix enough color from a full box color just to do my roots? Thanks!
