Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

fifteen years with grey hair. Chin length bob. It's slightly wavy. Silvery with highs and lows. I get compliments. I blow dry with a round brush. Easy. A shape up trim every 3 or 4 months for $23 at Super Cuts. Cheap, easy, pretty hair. I'm happy with my decision. I'm 72 and don't think about whether I look my age. Often times someone expresses surprise that I'm this age. I'm sure other ppl see me as just another Florida Boomer. Lol

My wallet is very happy!

I haven't done any coloring since I was dx with breast cancer in 2012---after going thru the 5 months of that chemo coursing thru my veins I decided that putting more chemicals on my scalp just didn't make sense. I have  very nice grey- brown hair that looks like I paid a lot to get it done. Am always being asked where I go, to have it colored. Plus---it costs $150 for coloring---yikes!!!

@wagirl : Smelling the chemicals and the increased prices was the final reason to go gray.

@Mersha ............When I first started to go gray it was battleship gray and looked awful.  So I continued to color it.  Somewhere along the years it became white.  When I discovered it was a nice color I stopped the coloring and never looked back.

Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

Several years ago, I had to stop coloring for the health of my hair and scalp.

My hair is still medium brown, with some gray and white strands around my face.

I'm hoping that my good skin balances them out.  ;-)

IMHO, the key thing with gray, white, and silver hair is:

#1 - that it's healthy

#2 - the ends are kept neat

#3 - the style is modern and/or flexible

Re: For Those Ladies Choosing To Go Gray...

I will never have gray hair. I made that decision when I saw how back in the 30's films, the method of aging used was to give the character gray hair. Then the "Carol Burnett Show" they depicted aging by putting her in gray wigs. That did it for me. Even Vicki Lawrence looked years older in skits playing that character on "Mama's Family."

I am naturally graying.  I have received both harsh and supportive comments from family and acquaintances -- so be prepared.

My main comment to all of my graying friends == you MUST change your usual makeup because in addition to your hair color, as you age your skin also changes and the with gray hair, you need to change up your makeup game and colors --- change your foundation, blush, shadows, lips and be sure your eyebrows are also paid attention and maybe even a bit darker.

Actually it is kinda fun to experiment with makeup -- develop your total new look.  And wear NEW colors in your fashion too.

@soozer  That is an excellent point on the makeup.

My stylist's biggest concer when we talked about me going gray was that with my fair skin, I would become washed out.

I read all of the detailed responses and feel to each her own decision.  For me, I have colored my hair for years and  will continue as long as I am able.  I am 73

Not for me. Don't want to look tired and old LOL

Might be , but, don't want to look it. ROFL

I've seen older women let that ol' long grey mess grow way long, then pigtail it, twist it up. Ugh !

Cut that mop off. Hot and heavy and nasty looking.
