Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and commiserations regarding the lousy state of Johnson & Johnson Q-Tips. My complaint was that the last 2-3 boxes I purchased in the last 3-4 months had Q-Tips that unraveled and became useless.

So I went searching for a replacement and ended up with Walgreen's own brand Q-Tips - 2 kinds: the first is shorter and comes in a round plastic container (these are made in Thailand); the other Q-Tips come in a box just like the J & J brand. Both of them are great! They do not fall apart or come unraveled at all.

And, I purchased the cotton tipped m/u applicators which have a pointy end and a flat end. (Can't recall the name.) Anyway, I love these for make-up! Purchased these at Walgreen's, too.
